You can upload files directly into a chat conversation to give the AI additional context for answering your questions.
How to upload a file
Click the + button to the left of the input field. Select one or more files from your device. The file begins uploading immediately and a progress indicator appears in the chat. Once processing completes, the file is available for the AI to reference.
You can also drag and drop files directly into the chat area. The interface highlights to indicate it is ready to receive your file.
Supported file formats
The Knowledge Agent accepts the following formats:
PDF - reports, invoices, contracts, presentations
Excel (.xlsx) - spreadsheets, financial data. When you upload an Excel file, a dialog appears letting you choose which sheets to include.
CSV - data exports, flat tables
TXT - plain text documents, notes
Images (PNG, JPG, WEBP) - screenshots, charts, diagrams
Adding a description to your file
After uploading, click the file's action menu and select "Add Description." Write a brief note explaining what the file contains - for example, "Q3 2025 marketing budget breakdown" or "Supplier contract for raw materials." This helps the AI understand the file's content and use it more effectively in its answers.
Referencing existing files with #
You do not need to re-upload files already in your library. Type # in the input field to open the file reference dropdown. Search for the file by name and select it. The file reference is embedded in your question, directing the AI to consider that specific document when answering.
The dropdown shows both integration files (from connected data sources) and uploaded files (from your document library).
Chat files vs. library files
It is important to understand the difference between uploading a file in a chat and uploading it in the Document Library.
Files uploaded in a chat are scoped to that conversation. They do not appear in the Document Library and are not visible to other users or in other chats. If the conversation is deleted, its files are deleted with it. Use chat uploads for quick, contextual analysis - a report you want to discuss right now, a screenshot you need the AI to read, or a data export relevant only to this question.
Files uploaded in the Document Library are permanent, organization-wide assets. They are visible in the File Manager, can be shared with team members, and can be referenced from any chat using #.
When you use the # reference inside a chat, the dropdown shows both your library files and the files uploaded in the current conversation, giving you access to everything relevant.
If you upload a file in a chat and later realize you want it available across the platform, upload it again through the Document Library.
